designs: As infinite and as variegated as Indonesian society itself. There are basically 3 types: horizontal (called 'soft rain'), vertical, and diagonal. Some designs are non-symmetrical and free, others are much more rigid. Diagonal designs of motifs are considered less harsh than either vertical or horizontal. Most artisans copy from patterns but the older and more talented designers can draw intricate floral, geometric and wildlife patterns from memory- flowing designs filled with beautiful colors. The mctifs of Central Java vary greatly from those used on the north coast of Java. Other regions and cities prefer western motifs, and still others have ancient stylized motifs which are so simple yet so mysterious.

You find crazy quilt patterns, checkered and round patterns, intersecting circles, ovals, rosette shapes, stars, rhombuses, wavy lines, S-like flourishes, swastikas, bird tails or wings. Even partly completed batik, just a cream or white background with some unfinished patterns, is very striking. Sometimes the waxed cloth is crackled by hand to create a shattered effect. In the Central Javanese sultanates certain patterns reflect the position of the wearer. Court officials, bridal couples and important people wear a special sarung (dodot) which is much larger than that worn by ordinary people. It usually has an overall pattern or is divided in sections showing a double row of triangular designs, symbolic of fertility (tumpal).
