instruments:
The main theme is carried by the saron, a set of convex metallic
resonating keys which are beaten with small mallets. This sound
is given more depth and is paraphrased by the xylophone-like gender,
a row of small bronze slabs suspended by 2 cords over a similar
row of resonant tubes. Then there are the short flat dull accents
of the ketuk, while the kenong has deep resounding notes. The
various gong tones and subtle drum beats are difficult to distinguish
at first. The gongs reverberate with incredible shimmering echoing
notes. There are half a dozen drums. The kendang provides the
beat for the melody, accelerating or lowering the tempo as the
composition requires. The beat of the keprak (wood-block) provides
the rhythm for the dancers. The sorrowful violin-like two-stringed
rebab accompanies the chorus who sings in unison or recites speeches
of the plot of a a wayang in nasal tones. Light magical flutes
(suling) are the only wind instruments in the game/an, paraphrasing
the nuclear theme in a higher key.
