There
are both classical and popular. Because of the split of the Kingdom
of Mataram into vassal states in 1755, the art of court dancing
evolved differently in the two central Javanese kratons. These
Javanese capitals have always been rivals: Solo thinks that Yogya
dancers are too stiff and Yogya considers Solo dancers too slack
and casual. The differences today in the two schools are still
recognizable though unimportant. In the court dancing, emphasis
is on angular graceful poses and smooth, subtle gestures. This
type of dancing is far removed from western theories of art and
reflects the Javanese court's ultra-refinement. Having evolved
at a time of warring states, classical dancing is executed with
all the delibation of a slow march and the precision of a drill
manoevure. Sometimes years of arduous muscular training is required
to execute gestures such as the bending of the hand until the
fingers touch the forearm, i.e. to imitate the opening of flower
petals. Dancers are incredibly detached. Their inaction and long
periods of immobility are just as important as the action. All
the pauses, silences, motions arrested in space, with the eyes
lowered and the meditative poses, make Javanese dance hypnotic
to watch.

The
tradition of classical dancing was once looked upon as a sacred
heirloom by the courts. Dancers selected from the lower class
families of the kraton population could take part only in supporting
roles in the royal plays. It wasn't until 1918 that the Krida
Beksa Wirama Dance School was founded outside the walls of the
Yogya kraton in order to perpetuate the Javanese arts by teaching
any pupil the dances practiced in the court. The royal monopoly
on dancing was at last broken. Many village groups have since
imitated and dilluted the courtly style. dance hire: Private dance
groups will perform on occasions of anniversaries, wedding receptions,
or selematans. A group can be hired from anywhere between Rp 2000
and Rp50,000 (average, around Rp10,00015,000). If you hire a group
to perform you'll thus repay the family you're staying with for
their kindness, their prestige in the village or kampung would
rise, and their neighbors would share in the pleasure.
