kecapi: A unique Sundanese instrument used as a part of the gamelan in West Java. This boat-shaped plucked zither (found in two sizes) often has a su/ing or vocal accompaniment. angklung: A portable instrument made from bamboo tubes cut to different lengths and freely suspended in a frame. Although restricted to only 4 notes, a strange xylophonic sound is produced when the frame is shook. The angklung was used in ancient times for marching into battles. It has now been adapted to western scales and large angk/ung orchestras can play European as well as Indonesian songs. The game/an angk/ung orchestra, very popular in West Java, combines these bamboo instruments with gongs and drums.
