A
wavy bladed dagger. Its use in ceremonial occasions on Java still
persists; it's worn at weddings and by young boys to their circumcision
ceremony. There are rules pertaining to the wearing of it. On
Java it must be stuck in the belt in back so that the end of the
sheath points to the left and the hilt points to the right. A
very high mystic value is given this instrument of death. Traditionally,
old kris pusaka are part of the family's heirlooms kept in the
back of the house with other objects of the cult of the ancestors.
Once a year at a rite the kris is taken out, a sacrifice shown
to it, incense burned, and the blade rubbed down with ointments.
This ceremony is still practiced in Central Java. Carved out of
gold and silver and studded with gems, a kris was at one time
the exclusive right of the noble class. The kris must suit the
wearer's disposition and character exactly, it was the ideal alter
ego.
The
number of times it had drawn blood added to its power and this
dagger was once used in the execution of criminals by sultans
who plunged the blade through the shoulder to the heart of the
kneeling man. The owner may bring the blade into contact with
the entrails and brain of a snake to also increase its power.
A kris has a spirit and is capable of sorcery. It can talk, fly,
swim, turn into a snake, even father human children. Designs on
the blade were intended to ward off demons and they rendered the
wearer unwoundable. Its invisible venom kills men simply by pointing
it at someone or by stabbing it into the shadows or footprints
of intended victims. When danger is near, the kris has been known
to rattle in its sheath.
