design: On the best kris the grips often have exquisite carving in ivory or metalwork with such decorations as raksasa figures (demonic images to drive off evil spirits), little gnome-like men, or monkeys. There were sometimes up to 31 undulations and over 30 motifs on the blade. Some kris handles of noblemen were sculpted of gold and set with rubies, diamonds and saphires. The ornaments on the blade are also there for protection: delicate leaves, Garuda, or ka/a-figures representing time, and very frequently a nags. One model of the kris handle on Bali is the chrysalis of a big beetle with long antennae set in ebony. In Solo, you find the painted scabbard. The Majapahit Kris, of which you see only facsimilies nowadays, had both its blade and hilt forged out of a single piece of metal.
