kris-making: This unique Indonesian weapon was made by the empu or pande (smiths and armourers) who exercised a secret and holy craft. Though he usually came from a poor and humble family, the pande was addressed as an honored lord. The smithy was considered a hallowed place and the empu always carried out a very detailed ritual before work was to begin on each kris. These deadly weapons were forged by beating and folding alternate layers of meteorite iron and nickel. The blade was polished and treated for weeks with lemon juice, coconut water and arsenic. Then a secret formula would blacken the iron and whiten the nickel to make a strange pattern of rivulets. The art of cutting and folding these contrasting metals is now lost; the best nickelous iron from several meteorites embedded on Java was exhausted over 100 years ago. The metals later used were of inferior quality. Gradually over the 19th Century the superior arms of the Dutch made the kris obsolete in battle.
