Kuda Kepang (or Kuda Lopeng): East Java's famous horse-trance dance in which dancers ride black cut-out bamboo weave hobbyhorses to the rhythm of drums, gongs, flutes, and a man who beats a s teel pipe with a hammer. There are 4, 6 or 8 performers. Many variations in different parts of Java in which more masked players (even a role for a dragon), monsters, and mysterious rites are involved. There's no stage or enclosure for this dance. It could be dangerous, requiring the presence and aid of dukun (medicine-man) who uses mantras to control the dancers. Drugs, hypnosis or alcohol are never used. Sometimes there's a sham battle, then suddenly one of the dancers becomes possessed (jadi), thinking that he's a horse.

This state is usually induced by the pain of cracking each other with whips, sometimes drawing blood. The dancer gallops, canters, rears and prances like a circus pony. There's a bundle of hay in a corner which 'the horse' chews. A dancer often loses control while behaving like a horse- shrieking, twitching, slurping water from a pail, running wild and whinnying, rolling in the grass, charging with stiff body and blank voided expression. An old mystic teacher calms him and brings him out of the trance with incense and incantations.
