Reyog:
A wayang topeng masked dance in which a great leering tiger's
head or monster's headmask with peacock feathers on top is worn.
Sometimes weighing 50 kilos and up to 500 mm tall, it rests on
the nape of the neck and is held by the teeth. Though they only
have small builds, Reyog dancers have unbelievably strong neck
muscles due to dancing many hours wearing this heavy highlydecorated
headpiece. It's said to be impossible to strangle these dancers
with your hands. The story features a local king desiring the
daughter of a neighboring king. She doesn't desire him, so after
some fighting takes place she assigns her prospective husband
an impossible task: to dig a tunnel from his palace to her father's
palace. You may be bored by the story of the success of good over
evil, but the average villager sits enthralled and wideeyed for
4 hours. This dance is now encouraged by the East Java Tourist
Development Board to attract tourists. You can hire a whole performance
for about Rp6-7000 per hour. The Balinese Sarong dance might have
been derived from the Reyog.
