Serimpi:
A slow, graceful, disciplined classical dance of Central Java
using super-controlled movements of arms, hands, fingers and head;
perfected over centuries. Its sources are drawn from the same
sources as the Bedaya, the old Amir Hamzah stories, depicting
a battle between two rival princesses. Impersonal poise, subtle
restraint, and an intense inward meditation is maintained throughout
with the face tilting downwards, staring fixedly at the floor.
The dancers carry out unrealistic movements such as a fish flowing
through water or tip-toeing over the floor and gliding (called
'flying'), with a dagger in one hand and a fluttering scarf in
the other - a sort of stylized combat. Dancers' heads move slowly
from side to side in a regal manner while executing 'bird movements'
or 'make-up miming', the hips arch back slightly, the torso leaning
forward. Hands usually stay at hip level, breaking a little at
the elbow. Serimpi ends in a sitting position with a Hindu blessing.
