lakon: Wayang
orang combines the glamorous mythology of the Hindu epics with
classical Javanese dance, both interwoven with many tribal myths.
Like a good Shakespearean play there's a little something for
everyone - clowns, demons, magic, juggling, tricks, bawdy jokes,
a mixture of circus vaudville and the grace of ballet. The dialogues
are spoken in High Javanese, intoned with melodic, almost ecclesiastical
monotony except for the extremely stylized high-pitched cackle
of mockery or a sudden roar of anger. 50 different scenes are
sometimes played out and wayang orang could last from 6 hours
to 3 days. Nowadays you could see a girl putting on makeup, a
boy flying a kite, a woman weaving - anything could happen in
wayang orang.
